- So this is a workbook for a text I cannot find at a reasonable price. I do understand why the text is so overpriced: the exercises in this book are phenomenal for anyone wanting to tweak her style, learn the power of well-crafted sentences and paragraphs, and deepen her love of the English language. Tufte, my syntax guru, draws on the work of Christensen and the base of sentence combining. She uses many exquisitely beautiful examples of elegant writing and teaches grammar at the same time.
- If you are as disheartened as I am by the tortured or plodding syntax published in most newspapers and magazine, blogs and books, Tufte’s work will soothe your savage breast and guide you to a fuller exercise of your own syntactic style. If you happen to teach writing, this book will provide you with the basics for improving your students’ thinking as well as their sentence craft.
- I learned about this book through a University of Washington Experimental College course. The instructor taught from this book, though it was already out of print by then in the mid-1980s.
To paraphrase the instructor, painters learn to paint by going to studios and copying the styles of other artists. Grammer as Style serves the same purpose for writers. The book contains hundreds of examples of professional writers using basic grammar constructions to enliven their writing.
